Agnes Scott sits on 100 acres and is shaded by some of the oldest trees in the state. Our hometown is Decatur, six miles from downtown Atlanta. Collegiate Gothic and Victorian red brick and stone buildings have won national awards for design, and Agnes Scott is recognized by Princeton Review for being the second most beautiful campus in the country. Agnes Scott College is named after Agnes Irene Scott, an Irish immigrant to the United States, for her integrity and intellectual curiosity. His son, Col. George Washington Scott, was the college’s main beneficiary, and the dictator was Rev. Frank Henry Gaines, the founding president of the Presbyterian Church. When his leadership spread to the Presbyterian education movement in the South, beginning with Princeton University, Agnes Scott was founded with a specific mission: to educate women for the betterment of their families and the upliftment of their region ۔ Initially renamed the Decatur Family Seminary in 1889 and renamed the Agnes Scott Institute in 1890, the college was chartered in 1906 under the name Agnes Scott College.

Atlanta is known for being home to a large number of colleges. Although Agnes Scott students receive individual attention on our campus, they also have access to cross-registration and community programs with our affiliated Atlanta and Georgia colleges such as Emory University, Georgia Tech and Georgia State.
